Joon Youn (b. 1998) is an artist/curator working in Melbourne. Working across painting, sculpture, video, and installation, her works are naïve attempts to make sense of a sometimes-overwhelming world. Using irony, humour, and tension that emerge at the intersection of opposing ideas, such as productivity and escapism, Youn's practice explores the coping strategies we adopt to navigate contemporary life.
Youn holds a B.F.A – Painting from the Victorian College of the Arts, and completed an exchange program at the University of California, Berkeley in Fine Art. Recent solo exhibitions include Sting at Bus Projects (2024), Rub You at Seventh Gallery (2024), and On purchasing a star at KINGS ARI (2023). Her works have been selected for group exhibitions at Conners Conners Gallery, Blindside, TCB Art Inc, Trocadero, George Paton Gallery, and CAVES. She has curated and facilitated projects at Fiona and Sidney Myer Gallery, TCB, Niche Fetisch, and Second Space Projects. Commissioned projects include editioned works for Bus Projects (2025) and Blindside (2022) fundraisers. Youn was a recipient of the City of Melbourne Annual Arts Grant (2023) and the UMSU Creative Arts Grant (2020). She was awarded the NGV Women's Association Award (2019) and Melbourne Global Scholars Scholarship (2018). Recently, Youn was a semi-finalist in the 2024 Macquarie Emerging Artist Prize.
